Perfectionism can often result in personal catastrophe. Efforts to be perfect are actually limits that we put on ourselves. Athletes who strive for perfection constantly fail because perfection is unattainable. Rigid adherence to the desire for perfect outcomes is a set up for setback because you always come down hard on yourself for never attaining the goal. Watch out for the red-light indications of a tendency toward perfectionism: an obsession with external rewards, satisfaction only by external measurements, such as other’s opinions, rigid, unattainable goals, intolerance of failure, dwelling on negative outcomes, self-worth equated with end results, a constant fear of failure, procrastination or play-it-safe attitude, indecision and pessimism, tunnel (narrow) vision and harsh self-judgment coupled with constant frustration.

The search for perfection is an inflexible attitude, an attempt to force what can’t be. The best is to let go of futile behavior. Try to strive to excellence instead. If you have no limits, you will ultimately will achieve victory. This yielding approach does enable you to set high standards. If you don’t attain these standards, however, you can still win by yielding to your setbacks as lessons that will ultimately enable you to rise to greater heights.

Refuse to beat up on yourself for not being perfect. Don’t place all your energy in the outcomes. By realeasing the need to be one hundred percent perfect, you reduce the anxiety, stress, and tension caused by this quest and, consequently, your performance improves. You begin to experience more joy and fulfillment from your sport as you recapture your passion for the process of the game.

Things come and go; you’re up, then you’re down. Improvement in sport is a series of errors, mistakes, and setbacks, and when they are corrected, you begin to approach your potential. 

Striving for excellence requires a strong internal reward system that focuses on the pursuit of satisfaction, pride, peace, joy, and fun. In the pursuit of excellence, you set realistic, flexible goals that act as road markers on your path. An average performance is understood to be part of competing in sport. That’s it. You have a sense of self-worth just from participating and pursuing excellence; you don’t equate your self-worth with the game’s outcome. Instead of constantly fearing failure, you feel the joy of being in the arena and you feel fortunate to have the talents and abilities you do have in order to compete, regardless of results. Do not internalise failure as a statement of your athletic self-worth.

Every athlete and coach needs to remember the roller-coaster rhythms of performance. Remember that you live in a world where even the greatest athletes are imperfect.
