Detachment quiets the mind and opens the heart of extraordinary levels of energy, awareness, joy and power. Let go of your attachment to winning and achievement, and they will come your way. Athletes often claim to have let go during an event and have felt an energy they didn’t know they had, as a result.
Understand that by limiting desire for possessions, praise, and other external attachments, one creates enormous personal power. Athletes who are overly attached to winning medals and trophies, prize money, and accolades are at a great disadvantage because such ephemeral desires create much tension and pressure, which interfere with joy, fun, and fulfillment of performance. Detachment from these external desires reduces tension and improves performance.
Detachment doesn’t mean that you cease to care about a sporting event. You care immensely about how you play – the process itself is important as a vehicle for growth and discovery about what you can and can’t do. The outcome is a gauge that measures your level of improvement – accept it for what it truly is. Detachment means detaching from all the false beliefs that we attribute to success. A loss, or a victory, for that matter, is never a measure of your self-worth as an athlete or a person. By practicing detachment, your perspective on your sport is healthier. You can love it with passion, yet see it as only a little event in a vast a world of activity. The stronger the attachments, The greater the cost The more that is hoarded, The deeper the loss Know what is enough. Tao Te Ching, 44
